Part R&D lab, part event space, part office, part exhibit. All in a single space on a pier over the San Francisco Bay. And right away.

Stalled on an uninspiring design, the Sutter Health Innovation Center program contained a variety of uses in a technically complex site, and with no time to spare. Sutter Health contacted MMA for help. In a short span of time, MMA provided a compelling vision that wove the disparate programmatic needs into a single elegant narrative that inspires visitors and donors, can host large events or intimate meetings, fosters healthcare technology innovation in advanced maker laboratories, and reminds staff of their important mission, every day.

A curved LED screen at the entry elegantly directs visitors and employees to move through an exhibition highlighting the Innovation Center mission, accomplishments and awards. The working lab is positioned as an integral part of the tour, showcasing working robots and devices under construction. The home "stage sets" are both a proving ground for new technology and exhibit space highlighting innovative devices deployed at patient homes. Guests eventually land in an atrium space with a large screen for presentations, or upstairs in one of the well-appointed meeting rooms.

The project is completed and opened in March, 2026.
